Once upon a time, there was a curious boy named Davey Wavey. He liked to try new things, push his boundaries and get into mischief. Sometimes, he was a very naughty boy.
And one day, that very naughty boy found a butt plug.

Most likely, those would be the opening words of my biography or future wikipedia page.
Less glamorously, they also accurately describe last Thursday afternoon when, after finding an unused butt plug in my underwear drawer, I set out on a well-intention but ultimately ill-fated anal adventure.
Last week, I uploaded a new Himeros.tv video titled Butt Plug Ecstasy featuring Beau Reed. Each week, I’m joined by friends to discuss the new Himeros.tv videos in a free podcast called Himeros LIVE. You can catch our butt plug episode on Apple Podcasts, Google Play or Spotify.
In school, I wasn’t an overachiever – but, I always did the minimum. And that meant doing my homework. My approach to academia has carried over into my experience learning about sex; I always do my homework. And because we were scheduled to discuss a video about butt plugs during our podcast, I knew that I needed to try one for myself and follow along to the video.
My underwear drawer is a cemetery for misfit sex toys and props from previous YouTube videos. After digging around, I found a rather large and hefty butt plug. It was bigger than I had hoped for, but I am ambitious if nothing else. So, I cleaned myself up and got out a bottle of lube.
In the video, Beau effortlessly glides the vibrating butt plug into his fully relaxed, welcoming hole. Needless to say, my hole had a different vision of hospitality – and I found myself straddling furniture and office equipment alike to maneuver the toy. It felt like a performance art piece but without a message, mixed with a gymnastics routine but without the grace.
Most problematic of all, I couldn’t keep the butt plug inside me; it kept popping out. So, I tried sandwiching the toy between myself and a desk chair. It was a feat of physics and modern engineering, and somehow – in the midst of my flailing arms, sweat-covered brow and heavy breathing – I orgasmed.
It may not have been the angelic orgasm of Beau Reed – who, in the video, ejaculates with no hands – but it was an experience uniquely my own, and it was an experiment. In creating content for Himeros.tv with some of the world’s best and most renowned gay sex coaches, I’ve come to understand that our exploration of gay sex is an experiment. It’s about trying different things, and examining the result. How did it feel? Was is pleasurable? How so? What would you change? What came up for you?
Those experiments enable us to learn about ourselves, our desires, our partners and the world around us. And the results of those experiments guide our journey of sexual exploration and future decisions.
Last Thursday, my journey of sexual exploration yielded some interesting data. Sure, I learned that a smaller butt plug might be a more suitable option. But I also learned that when you try things at home, results may vary – and to have a sense of humor about sex. And that, if at first you don’t succeed, immortalize the evidence by recording a podcast with your friends.
